Benefits of Water Filtration

As with anything these days, there are always many options available when you are looking for ways to treat or filter well water. There are some things to consider before you choose one method over another. First, is your well water already treated? Is the well managed by a municipality and how is it treated? […]

We asked a local Vancouver Island Raw Chef, Shani Cranston from hOMegrownlivingfoods.ca  and MilagroRetreats.com to tell us how important the quality of the water she uses in her recipes is. As we expected, she emphasized clean, filtered water at all times. Read on to see what else Shani had to tell us about water quality: With Raw […]

You know that feeling when your head feels all stuffed up and your eyes are sore and dry, your throat is itchy and your nose is tender from wiping it so often? Yeah, that feeling, the head cold. There’s nothing like an aggressive head cold to take the spring out of your step and as we […]

If your cat won’t drink out of the water dish, there may be a reason. Cats instinctively prefer moving water for their hydration purposes. Some posit that this is because running water is less likely to contain parasites, others because the oxygen content is higher and still others because it tastes better. Regardless, if your […]

It’s no secret. We love and pamper our cats, to the point that many of us refer to ourselves as cat servants. We alter our homes and our habits to accommodate our feline friends, but are we doing everything we can to ensure our cats’ health? Why Tap Water May Not Be Safe For Your […]

5 Ways to Keep Your Resolutions

We are mid-way through 2014 and for many of us, our well-intentioned resolutions may be slipping by the wayside.

Everything seems completely doable when we’re planning and imaging the future especially when it comes to changes that we really, honestly want to make in our lives but sometimes, living gets in the way of well-intentioned goals.

I know, and you know that ensuring that you are properly hydrated is crucial to your health so I would like to help you keep your resolution to drink more water and here are my top 5 tips:

#1 Infuse Your Water

Infuse your water with berries, orange slices, lemons or cucumber slices to jazz things up. It looks pretty, tastes yummy and you get a little snack at the end!

Try dropping a few berries into an ice-cube tray next time you refill it and allow the cubes to freeze with the berries inside, now, you’ve taken the extra work out of infusing your water.

 #2 Fill a Large Jug

Fill a large jug or water bottle and keep it next to you so you don’t have to get up and refill it all the time. With water easily accessible you will be more likely to drink it up!

 #3 Make It a Challenge!

Challenge yourself to drink 16 ounces before lunch. Then again after lunch, and again after dinner. Do it and give yourself a mental high-five every time you finish!

#4 Make It a Habit

The Biggest Loser’s Bob Harper has said that he always drinks a large glass of water before every meal. No exceptions. Not only does this help manage portions and keep hunger at bay but it helps ensure that he is getting adequate hydration throughout his day.

 #5 Monitor Your Stream

By stream I mean pee. Every time you go to the washroom, take a moment and have a look at your urine. Take note of the colour, if it’s a pale yellow, you’re doing great but if the colour is veering into sunny yellow go and have a drink. Make this a regular habit and you will soon be conscious of your hydration levels.

I hope that these 5 tips will help you to keep your resolutions and be as healthy and hydrated as you can be in 2014!

Chlorine In Our Water

Chlorine is a damaging chemical to any living organism it comes into contact with. Chlorine is the 17th atomic element and readily combines with other elements due to its unstable molecular structure.  Chlorine is an extreme toxin to humans even at very low concentrations.  Respiratory problems are common due to the inhalation of chlorine gas from chlorinated water supplies. Chlorinated liquids (such as bleach) burn the skin and many common fabrics it comes into contact with. Chlorine has a unmistakeable pungent odor, detectable by humans at low concentrations of just 0.5 ppm (parts per million). Chlorine’s deadly capabilities were recognized and exploited during WW2 when it was used by the German forces due to its 100% fatality rate when inhaled at concentrations of 1000 ppm.

Chlorine has now been strongly linked to many critical health issues by doctors, scientists and medical authorities.  The evidence is so strong in fact that on Feb, 1st 1994 the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Carol Browner, announced a full scale plan favoring a broad ban on chlorine.  In this unprecedented move to reduce human exposure to chlorine the manufacturers or paper, textiles, pharmaceuticals and water treatment facilities alike would have to eliminate its usage.  In order for these industries to develop alternatives, time was generously given as the development of these alternative were estimated to cost tens of billions of dollars.  To date, the use of chlorine within these industries has not stopped.

This announcement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was greatly influenced by the mounting evidence from doctors and scientific researchers alike of DBP‘s (a by-product of chlorine) being 10,000 times more toxic to human health then chlorine itself.  DBP’s (disinfection by-products) form due to chlorine’s unstable molecular structure acting to combine with NOM (Natural Organic Matter) to form trihalomethanes (THM’s) and haloacetic acids (HAA5′s). Virtually all drinking water sources are rich in Natural Organic Matter and also in Chlorine, which means that there is a significant presence of DBP’s.  This is the direct cause behind virtually every treated water supply having high concentrations of trihalomethanes (THM’s) and haloacetic acids (HAA5′s) classed as DBP’s.  Out of all of the toxins found in your water these DBP’s are far more dangerous to the health of you and your loved ones then other common contaminants found in drinking water.

Of the DBP’s Class of contaminants (THM’s) Trihalomethanes have been verified as Cancer Group B Carcinogens, meaning they have been proven to cause cancer is a wide variety of animals tested.  Reproductive problems have also been directly linked to THM’s in both Humans and Animals.  Human Studies have confirmed that long term exposure to chlorine treated water will more then double an individuals risk of developing bladder and rectal cancers.

Trihalomethanes (THM) are a group of four chemicals that are formed when chlorine reacts and combines with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter in the water supply. The trihalomethanes are chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform. The EPA set a U.S. standard in 2003 calling for a maximum annual average of 80 ppb (Parts per billion) for city and municipal water treatment plants.  However this has been greatly unenforceable due to the great cost to the individual municipality to upgrade their water treatment systems to these standards.  As such, there has been little progress and the problem persists throughout.

There have been many studies conducted by both health authorities and universities which all concur that Chlorine in combination with natural occurring matter to form THM’s is causing major health implications to the population being exposed.

Waller et Al,. 1998 study California Dept of Health.

“Women with high consumption of tap water (≥ 5 glasses/day) containing high levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHM) (≥ 75 μg/L) had an increased odds of spontaneous abortion on the order of 80%…”

Effects of Trihalomethanes (THM’s) in Public Drinking Supplies; From the “Reproductive Care program of Nova Scotia”  “Department of community health and epidemiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dalhousie University.

“Much of the focus on the Human health effects from exposure to chlorination by-products has been related to cancer risks, particularly bladder and colon cancer…”

US Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development, National Exposure Research Laboratory, Athens, GA 30605, USA

“Although drinking-water disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been studied for the last 30 years, significant, new concerns have arisen. These concerns include adverse reproductive and developmental effects”

Never before in history has there been more reason for concern over what is found in your drinking water. Fortunately, the solution is simple accessible, and nearly universally effective. Why I Don’t Trust Tap Water (And Neither Should You!)

Because water is paramount to good health, it’s one thing you don’t want to take for granted – and yet, many of us do. I used to fall into that camp myself. I never gave much thought to the water that I drank because I was raised drinking tap water. Like many, I’d turn on the tap, fill my glass and gulp it down. But one day I had a rude awakening. I noticed that the dish rack appeared very dirty, with reddish stains showing on the drain pan and black deposits visible on the crevices of the rack itself. I thought it was a bit odd. I had never noticed it before and chalked it up to the kids not washing something properly and the residue likely dripped all over the dish rack.

I gave the rack a good scrub and didn’t give it another thought, until a few days later when I noticed the same types of stains and deposits on the dish rack again. Within a few days the dish rack looked as though it had not been cleaned in months! And this time I knew it was not the result of my children’s sloppy dish washing habits, because they were away on a ski trip.

As I stared at the dish rack I was filled with a sense of revulsion because I knew that the stains on the rack and pan were the result of water, clean tap water that I had rinsed the dishes with, dripping onto the rack and pan – the very same water that was deemed clean and safe by the city, and which I drank freely each and every day. I knew one thing for sure: clean water does not leave dirty deposits. This realization sent me on a quest to learn what could be at the root of these stains and deposits – and what I learned was very unsettling.

We assume that municipal tap water is clean and safe. In fact, if you had asked me about the tap water in my city I would have boasted that, in my opinion, it was the best in the world! It tasted great and had no discernible smell to it like the heavily chlorinated tap water I had tasted in larger cities. However, great taste does not necessarily mean that the water is clean and safe. When I did a little research on tap water I was more than a little surprised. Here is what I found: Though municipal water (tap water) is treated to combat disease-causing bacteria and micro organisms, there’s a whole lot more in tap water than dead bacteria, chlorine, fluoride, and aluminium sulphate (yes, in some areas aluminium sulphate is used to make the water appear clear!).

Tap water can also contain all kinds of other goodies that leach into our water supply through run off and aging pipes, and local water treatment does not address this. The addition of chlorine to drinking water only addresses the threat of bacteria – it does not address: contaminants from industrial plants, pesticides and herbicides from farming and gardening, animal waste, rust, dirt, sludge, antibiotics or other pharmaceuticals, or metals such as lead and copper. A frightening discovery for this tap water drinker, because these elements show up in tap water all over the world. In some areas of the world chlorine resistant bacteria such as Giardia, which is a definite threat to health, have also been discovered in treated municipal water. After my investigation I knew one thing for sure – I did not want any of those things in the water I drank, bathed with, or washed my veggies in.

So what’s the solution? Well, some people resort to bottled water, but in my mind bottled water is not a viable alternative for many reasons. First of all, it’s a poor choice environmentally speaking. Even though plastic water bottles can be recycled, we can certainly make better use of the resources and energy required for manufacturing and recycling plastic bottles. Second, it’s insanely costly. Can you imagine the cost of cleaning your food and dishes with bottled water, let alone the cost of relying on bottled water as the only source for your drinking water?! And third – you may be surprised to learn, as I was, that bottled water is not necessarily any better than tap water. Sometimes it is not treated at all. It’s obtained straight from a reservoir which may be contaminated with all manner of things, natural and otherwise, and other times bottled water is derived from the same source as the water from your tap…

In my mind, there is only one safe and healthy solution: filtered water – more specifically, water that is purified through a process known as reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis purifies water by filtering water under pressure through a very fine, semi-permeable membrane, trapping toxins and contaminants which are too large to pass through the membrane. Reverse osmosis is simple and practical because it utilizes the water that is delivered to your home through your municipal water system, and the result is a cost effective means of ridding your water of toxins and impurities while delivering clean, clear, great tasting water!

If you’re at all concerned about the quality of your water, or you simply want to be certain, you should choose an Aquasafe Home Reverse Osmosis System. Why Water Quality is Crucial to a Raw Foodist

With Raw Food preparation there is no opportunity to boil away impurities that are present in tap water. It is essential to use the purest water possible to ensure that your final creation is uncontaminated. Besides the health concerns of polluted tap water, there is often a taste to this adulterated liquid with added chlorine and fluoride. With raw food, you want the taste of your ingredients to shine through.

Water Filtration vs Bottled Water!

It’s not even close

Today’s post comes to us today from Angelic Grey, an aspiring journalist and student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

Water filtration systems have revolutionized our world. They are energy efficient and create much less physical waste and toxic waste than bottled water. They are a much more inexpensive alternative to bottled water in terms of money, and in terms of environmental impact.

Bottled water is a sold by huge corporations that move communities like yours, dam up rivers and displace thousands, in some cases millions of people. They pay nothing for the water. They pump thousands of gallons all day every day even during water shortages, and droughts. It is then trucked away, bottled in plastic, which is a non-renewable resource, and sold back to us at a higher price than gasoline. Furthermore, to make plastic requires petroleum (another non-renewable resource) and also a lot of energy which in turn becomes carbon emissions that are pumped into the atmosphere, further contributing to global warming, and jeopardizing future generations.

This is what results from bottled water.

There is also the physical waste that comes from using plastic bottles. Sure a lot of them are recycled, but a lot of countries and even some states in the US still do not have recycling. These bottles find their way into rivers and oceans where they photo-degrade (but never biodegrade completely) into smaller and smaller pieces, and release harmful pollutants and chemicals that threaten sea life, birds and ultimately, us.

It is a known FACT that there is not one person in the USFDA that monitors or regulates what is in bottled water. Most of the bottled water comes from ground water sources which contain contaminants and toxins such as animal and human waste, sewage, pesticides from crops, and other chemicals such as lead, arsenic, fluoride and chlorine, to name a few. A lot of these chemicals lead to cancers, diabetes and heart disease. A lot of the long-term effects are still unknown because bottled water hasn’t been around long enough to conduct such studies. None of this is monitored by our government.

Some places in the world do not have the luxury of having water piped to their homes. Having a water filtration system in your home filters your tap water and makes it safe for drinking. The bottom line is that water is an element, like air. It belongs to everyone. Every time you pay for a bottle of water, you are voting to support these corporations. Choose a water filtration system and take the initiative towards a healthier planet!

Aquasafe’s home reverse osmosis water filtration systems produce water that is more reliably pure than bottled water at a fraction of the cost. Safe water is essential to life. Choose safe water you can count on!

5 Things That May Be In Your Water That Could Affect Your Baby’s Health

As any new parent will tell you, the first few months at home can be terrifying! Baby’s health is of the utmost importance and now there are so many new things to be aware of!

Suddenly there is danger at every turn! The family dog is now a potential baby-biter, the staircase is a steep fall waiting to happen, your bed sheets are housing dust mites and other unwanted intruders that might harm your precious baby.

Plus, you’ve got to figure out how to bath, clothe and feed her.

It doesn’t matter whether you choose to bottle feed from necessity or preference, that choice is personal and entirely up to you but you do need to be aware of a few factors when preparing your baby’s bottles. In particular, I want to discuss water purity with you. Water quality varies from municipality to municipality so you should check with our local authorities to see how your water stacks up, however, it is safe to assume that your water should be filtered and/or boiled before serving it to Baby.

What In Our Water Could Affect Baby’s Health?

What’s in your water?

Uranium

The Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality require that uranium content is less than 0.02 mg/L, however the World Health Organization has found levels as high as 4.2  µg/litre (twice the limit).

“Little information is available on the chronic health effects of exposure to environmental uranium in humans. In Nova Scotia, Canada, clinical studies were performed on 324 persons exposed to variable amounts of naturally occurring uranium in drinking-water (up to 0.7 mg/litre) supplied from private wells. No relationship was found between overt renal disease or any other symptomatic complaint and exposure to uranium. However, a trend towards increasing excretion of urinary β-2-microglobulin and increasing concentration of uranium in well water was observed; this raises the possibility that an early tubular defect was present and suggests that this parameter might be useful as an index of subclinical toxicity. The group with the highest uranium concentrations in well water failed to follow this trend, but this was attributed to the fact that most of the individuals in this group had significantly reduced their consumption of well water by the time the measurements were made, leading to the conclusion that the suspected tubular defect might well be rapidly reversible (Moss et al., 1983; Moss, 1985).”

-World Health Organization

Pesticides

Agricultural pesticides are very often found in water supplies. You’ve read about Lindane (a chemical that has been used as an agricultural pesticide) in an earlier post but it is significant enough to mention again today.  Lindane is a neurotoxin that can affect the nervous system. While handling and production of this chemical is strictly regulated, Lindane does exist in our environment and can easily find its way to our water supply.

Bacteria

E. Coli Bacteria and related bacteria make up about 0.1% of gut flora, and fecal–oral transmission is the major route through which pathogenic strains of the bacterium cause disease. Most strains of E. Coli are harmless but some can make you very ill and cause serious food poisoning in humans.

Flouride

The American Dental Association recommends not using water that contains high levels of fluoride when mixing powdered or concentrated baby formula. Too much fluoride puts your baby at risk for enamel fluorosis, a condition that develops while the teeth are forming in the gums. With this condition, the baby teeth develop white streaks. Fluorosis is a cosmetic issue that affects both baby teeth and permanent teeth while they’re forming under the gums.

Lead

If you suspect that there is lead in your tap water you may want to check with your provincial or state ministry to be sure. Canadian experts recommend boiling water until it reaches a rolling boil  for 2 minutes for safest infant consumption. Alternatively, consider a filtration system to remove lead and other contaminates.

If you’re at all concerned about the quality of your tap water, you should choose an Aquasafe Home Reverse Osmosis System. An Aquasafe Home Reverse Osmosis system will remove all contaminants from water, including everything mentioned in this article, producing guaranteed safe water you can count on every time. And it’s only a few cents per liter! Shop online and save today.

Logical Hydration: Simple Ways to Consume More Water

As a full time yoga teacher, one of the comments I hear most often is “I don’t drink enough water”. I hear it over and over again from the same people. We all need to consume more water.

What a human dilemma!

Water intake is something we would like to change, it is something that is so healthy for us, we talk about it often, yet to actually initiate change, do the act of a different motion, can seem impossible.

Some inspiration:

Water is obviously necessary to every human body’s survival.

Water hydrates the cells, helps the body to flush toxins, and aids in a feeling of energy and clarity. The fact is that every organ in the body benefits from being hydrated.

My intention is to convince you to drink more water  so I will share what I have learned from experience.

It is something you can experience too.

Try drinking 8 massive glasses of water a day and feel the difference it makes for you.  Tweet

To people with persistent cramping and pain, I would recommend that they hydrate! Everyone, hydrate!!

I am not saying that I stick to this regimen 7 days a week, 365 days a year by any means, but the following are my guidelines I try to stick to.

Here are some ways that I consume more water:

-After every yoga class I teach or take, I drink at least one glass of water to help flush out toxins. I do not recommend that you drink during class, there is something to be said of the internal fire created with your yoga practice.

-Once a week minimum, or after a vigorous class/day I have an epsom salt bath. Half a cup of epsom salts dissolved in a hot bath for 20 minutes. I swear by this. If you are overwhelmed with stress, if you are coming down with an illness, or just physically run down, try it. Try once a week for a month, and drink a glass of water while you are there;)

-First thing in the morning, have your big glass of water with a teaspoon of either lemon, or organic apple cider vinegar. It is delicious, it alkalizes your stomach before anything else goes in there. This helps with aches and pains, food cravings, digestion, and the list goes on and on.

-Hot/cold therapy: steam or sauna for as long as you can stand it, then cold shower your whole body one joint at a time for as long as you can stand it. Continue back and forth for as long as you can stand it. I go for three rounds usually. Drink lots of water before, during, and after. This practice will flush your lymphatic system and should be experienced once a week. Words cannot describe how good you will feel, it must be felt. Please discuss this with your doctor first if you have any health concerns.

-Herbal tea. Personally, I find when it gets colder outside, I want hot water to drink because I find that room temperature water cools me down. There are so many delicious herbal teas available to encourage multiple, daily hydration sessions.

-Drink room temperature water. Not refrigerated – no ice. Once you switch you may never go back. The cold shocks the system, so it goes right through you, leaving you with less hydration and often has negative effects on the digestive system.

-Drink from a glass vessel if possible. Avoid plastics, while there are BPA free plastic water bottles there really is nothing as satisfying as the flavour of water out of a glass jar;)

-Find a quality of water that you enjoy. These days there are a number of additives in our tap water, some regions are worse than others. I avoid fluoride in my water at all costs. Sometimes I choose to go without drinking water because I can’t fathom the idea of drinking fluoride. If you look it up, you will know why. It is horrific stuff to put in your body!

-Drink water 30 mins before a meal or about an hour after a meal. We have a digestive fire that “burns” up our food, then creates energy, and we know how the rest goes. Do not put out your digestive fire. If you can avoid it, don’t drink during meals. I know this may be a crazy idea for some of you, so just decrease the amount that you drink during meals as much as possible.

“The three great essentials to accomplish anything worthwhile are, first, hard work ; second, stick to-itiveness; third, common sense.”

-Thomas Edison

A clean body creates the foundation for a clean mind. A mind that is not distracted by foot cramps, or poor digestion, or pain, or headaches. A mind that can concentrate on gratitude for so long that it achieves absolute and eternal bliss, of course, due to lack of distractions from a sluggish body/mind. I hope you feel inspired to drink more water and good luck;)

Beryllium Is Not Something You Need In Your Body Or Your Water

Beryllium (Photo credit: p.Gordon)

Beryllium is a naturally occurring chemical element that increases hardness and resistance to corrosion when it is alloyed with other elements like aluminium, copper, iron and nickel, which, along with several of its other properties make it ideal for work with high-speed aircraft, space vehicles and even missiles. However, our bodies have no need of this element and in fact it is quite toxic.

Our Bodies Don’t Need Beryllium, But Is It Dangerous?

Commercial use of this element is a challenge because it is quite toxic, and it is therefore restricted to military and industrial use. It is commonly used in radiation windows for X-ray tubes, for pipes in high energy particle collision experiments and as a lightweight component in military tools and for non-sparking tools and electrical contacts.Beryllium, when inhaled, is corrosive and can cause a life-threatening allergic disease called Berylliosis. It is similar to tuberculosis and sarcoidosis in symptoms and therefore can be hard to diagnose. It is considered an occupational lung disease because it is associated with aerospace manufacturing. The disease is incurable, but symptoms can be managed.

Beryllium occurs naturally in some bedrock geology (it is found in over 100 minerals) and as such can leech into ground water supplies. It can also be present in discharge from mines, metal refineries, coal burning factories, and from electrical, aerospace and defence industries. It is considered a possible carcinogen. It levels are monitored, along with those of other radionuclides which may have detrimental health effects in high enough concentrations. However, Beryllium and other radionuclides encountered in drinking water are typically well below the threshold for potential health risks.

Where Might We Be At Risk Of Beryllium In Our Drinking Water?

If you live near any of the industries where beryllium is employed, there is a potential risk of higher beryllium levels in your drinking water due to run off – especially if your water comes from a ground water source like a river or a lake. Mining and other industries are strictly regulated and monitored to minimize potential water contamination, and your city may monitor Beryllium levels specifically because of this proximity. A home water filtration system – especially one as thorough as a reverse osmosis system – can ensure that you’re safe and unexposed.
